THE BIG NEWS....

Red ArrowFORMER MOUNTIE, BRUCE IRVIN, DRAFTED 15TH OVERALL IN 2012 NFL DRAFT! Irvin becomes the first round pick of the Seattle Seahawks!
April 26, 2012
(New York, NY) Former Mountie great, Bruce Irvin, was drafted 15th overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, making him the #1 pick of the Seattle Seahawks. Irvin was predicted to be drafted in the second round, but was snatched up early in the first round. Irvin put some very impressive numbers at the NFL combine, raising his stock and making him a much sought after defensive end.

Irvin was part of the Mounties 2009 State and National Championship Football Team where he lead the team as a defensive end. Coming to Mt. SAC to get a fresh start, he arrived late to the team. The Mt. SAC Staff realized his defensive potential and quickly converted him from a defensive back to a defensive end... and the rest is history. He went to star at the University of West Virginia for two years where he became an electrifying pass rusher who helped lead the Mountaineers to a huge, 70-33, win over Clemson in the 2012 Orange Bowl.

Click here to view pre-draft article on Bruce Irvin (msnsports.net)

Irvin will join a long line of Mountie greats in professional football and is the third highest drafted Mountie behind Chris McAlister (1st Round, 10th overall pick, Super Bowl Champion), and Leonard Russell (1st Round, 14th overall pick, AFL Rookie of the Year). Other Notable Mountie Professional Football Players include: Claudie Minor, Anthony Calvillo (all-time professional passer, CFL), Alfonso Boone (drafted out of Mt. SAC), Max Montoya (4X Pro Bowler), Antonio Pierce (Super Bowl Champion), Don Shy and Don Warren (3X Super Bowl Champion).

Another former teammate of Irvin at Mt. SAC, Hebron "Loni" Fangupo (BYU, DT) was picked up on Free Agency by the Houston Texans.

Red ArrowMounties Come Up Short In State Football Championship Game
Early City College of San Francisco lead is too much to overcome for the Mounties
December 10, 2011
(San Francisco, CA) The early 28-0 lead by City College of San Francisco was too much to overcome for the Mountie Football Team who ended up scoring 42 points to the Rams, 52 points. Although the Mounties had many opportunities to win the game, the Rams defense played tough when it mattered, including stopping two Mountie goal line stands. After some adjustments later in the game, the Mounties Offense was a scoring machine, easily scoring 4 touchdowns in the 4th quarter. Unfortunately, the Rams also made some key adjustments, scoring 2 touchdowns late in the game (3:53 and 0:41 left in the game) to push them over the top and capture their 6th California Community College Athletic Association Football Championship.

Freshman Linebacker, Julian Gener (Bishop Amat H.S.) was named the CCCAA State Championship Defensive Player of the Game.

The Mounties finish the season with a 11-2 overall record, a conference, National Bowl and Southern California Championship. Congratulations to Conference Coach of the Year, Bob Jastrab, his staff and student/athletes for another outstanding football season.

Red ArrowMt. SAC Women's Cross Country Takes 3rd Place At State Championships
Men's Team Finishes In 14th Place
November, 29, 2011

(Fresno, CA) The Mountie Women's Cross Country Team did not have a single individual medalist (Top 16) at the 2011 California State Cross Country Championships which were held at Woodward Park in Fresno. Without a frontrunner, they did something that very few teams, if any, have ever done in this predicament... placed in the top 3. The very close team gap of 34 seconds (time from first finisher to 5th finisher) at the end of the 5 kilometer course, catapulted the Mounties into the third place, trophy winning slot with 123 points. Brianna Gonzales (FR, Ontario H.S.) led the Mounties in 19th place with a time of 19:03.

Congratulations to Head Coach Doug Todd and the Mt. SAC Women's Cross Country Team for an incredible State Trophy Winning Season!

The men's team finished their 2011 in 14th place at the State Championships. Leading the way for the Mounties was Gabriel Ruano (FR, Azusa H.S.) who ran the 4 mile course in 21:08. Incredibly, this was Ruano's first year ever running Cross Country. A former High Jumper, he was converted into a 800 meter runner last track season and this year he has led the Mounties all cross country season.

Red Arrow Former Mt. SAC Quarterback, Anthony Calvillo, Breaks All-Time Professional Football Passing Yardage Record!
October 12, 2011

(Walnut, CA) On Monday, in a game against the Toronto Argonauts, former Mt. SAC Quarterback Anthony Calvillo of the Montreal Allouettes, broke the all-time professional football passing yardage record with a 50 yard touchdown pass that raised his career passing yardage total to 72,429 yards. The veteran quarterback has spent 17 seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL) where he has become a superstar, capturing 3 Grey Cups (CFL Championship) and 3 CFL Most Outstanding Player awards. Despite taking time off to help his wife battle B-cell lymphoma, battling thyroid cancer himself and then having shoulder surgery, Calvillo keeps getting better with age.

A graduate of La Puente High School, Calvillo played for the Mounties in 1990 and 1991. After two record breaking seasons at quarterback, he went on to start at Utah State for two more years. At Utah State he led the Aggies to their first ever Bowl Game victory in the Las Vegas Bowl and set the school record in total offense and most touchdown passes in a game.

The record surpassed the old record held by former Canadian Football Star, Damon Allen and tops the careers of other great quarterbacks on the top ten list including Brett Favre (71,838 yards), Warren Moon (70,553 yards), Dan Marino (61, 361 yards), Doug Flutie (58,179), Peyton Manning (54, 828 yards) and John Elway (51,475 yards).

Red ArrowOne Special Game... No Losers, Just One Winner
October 1, 2011

(Walnut, CA)The matchup between Bakersfield College and Mt. SAC proved to be another hard fought and high intensity game in this competitive rivalry. The difference at this years contest was the outpouring compassion shown by everyone in Hilmer Lodge Stadium for the nights special guest, Mandy Pongs.

Pongs, a former standout softball student/athlete and current volunteer assistant coach for the Mounties, is battling a rare and agressive form of cancer that required a radical hysterectomy and chemotherapy treatments.

To help Pongs with the high costs of cancer treatments, Head Football Coach, Bob Jastrab graciously donated all program proceeds and dedicated the game as Mandy Pongs Night. Along with Jastrab, his parents graciously donated a number of wonderful raffle prizes for a special raffle.

The generosity and compassion didn't stop there and it did not stop with just the Mountie Fans. The Women's Softball Team, who volunteered to help sell programs and raffle tickets, were nearly brought to tears when they received an outpouring of support from the Bakersfield Fans. With about 1,000 people in attendance (both sides), over $2,500 was collected for Pongs.

"In regards to our fans here at Bakersfield College, we do have a special situation. They are great!" stated new Bakersfield Athletic Director, Ryan Beckwith. "Ultimately the support shown to Mandy on Saturday night, from both sides, is why we got into this business to begin with. It truly was an extraordinary event. The compassion shown to Mandy... touched us all."

"I want to thank everyone in attendance at the game for their support of Mandy." replied Mt. SAC Athletics Director, Joe Jennum. "For two teams and two communities competing against each other, to come together to help support this courageous young woman is beyond words. It really puts what is important into perspective."

In the end, the Mounties edged the Renegades, 41-27, however, at this game, there were no losers, only one winner.... Mandy Pongs.
